Bond's Hospital
Old Bond’s Hospital was built in the early sixteenth century in a corner of the city wall in Hill Street next to St. John’s Church. The original building is still in occupation today with six self-contained flats with kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room all recently renovated to meet the expectations of today’s residents. In the 1970’s an extension was added now with four upgraded flats. The most recent development in 2004 added 31 further flats three of which have two bedrooms. All are centrally heated and most have walk-in shower rooms. The kitchens in the flats are fully fitted with cooker and fridge/freezer. There are two lifts giving easy access to the upper floors. On the ground floor there is a large communal lounge with kitchen and almost every day there are activities arranged. There is also conservatory, library and a communal laundry room with two washing machines and tumble driers, all of which are adjacent to the kitchen . There is access to the garden which has a drying area.
The gardens contain the most complete section of the city wall and are carefully maintained. Several residents have their own plots and there are two sheds for residents’ use.
FORD'S HOSPITAL
Ford’s Hospital was built a few years later than Bond’s Hospital in Greyfriars Lane and is one the finest examples in the country of a Tudor building with a small courtyard. It is a grade 1 listed building and was unfortunately heavily damaged during the second world war and restored by public subscription. In 2014/15 it underwent a major renovation and now consist of 5 self contained flats a small lounge and a well-equipped laundry room. It has a delightful garden and is extremely well located for the city centre.
BONDS COURT
Bond’s Court, Hill street was opened in 1985 by Diana, Princess of Wales. There are 26 self-contained flats and the building offers similar facilities to that at Bond’s Hospital all be it all on a slightly smaller scale.
The communal areas to the building are currently being modernised. There is a communal laundry and kitchen area together with a hairdressing salon for ladies and men.
There is also a delightful garden which is a common theme amongst our Almshouses as we believe that the sanctuary provided by a private garden is a real asset for our residents.
Many of the flats at Bond’s Court have under gone major refurbishment principally to the kitchens and bathrooms.
The accommodation is on 2 stories with a lift.
BOND'S LODGE
Bond’s Lodge is the latest addition to our Almshouses and was completed in 2020 providing 28 single flats and 17 two bedroomed flats.
This marked a major investment for the Charity and took the number of flats from 73 up to 118 and providing sheltered accommodation for in the region of 130 people.
Bond’s Lodge is built on 3 stories with a traditional pitched roof and each flat will be fitted with some of the latest technology and equipment.
The heating system is under floor which provides maximum space within the flat and certainly makes it easier to arrange furniture as there are no radiators on the walls.
The kitchens are fully fitted and have an eye level ovens, ceramic hobs, extractor hoods, integrated dishwashers, integrated fridge-freezers and integrated washer-dryers.
We still have a laundry room which will be available to use for all residents but the trustees understand that to have your own washer-dryer is most beneficial.
Bond’s Lodge has a courtyard style garden together with its own greenhouse and a magnificent living wall.
The residents lounge has a small kitchen area off it and the use of bi-fold doors and large glazed areas the building is light, spacious and provides an extremely pleasant environment for its residents.
